National BLT Month

There’s no simpler pleasure than the classic combination of salty bacon layered between juicy tomatoes, crisp, crunchy lettuce and fresh toasted bread. The BLT is an iconic sandwich, with endless variations and a huge fan base. Today we’re combining two powerful ingredients to put a fresh spin on the traditional BLT.

BACON. (Of course)

And fresh Ahi tuna! This type of fish has a moderately powerful flavor that will stand up to the infamously strong potency of bacon. And Ahi tuna pairs specifically well with tomatoes, avocado and bacon so don’t be afraid to think outside of the box and throw some tuna on your BLT. The daring addition will bring your sandwich up to a whole new level of gourmet.

Ahi Tuna BLT

Serves 2


2   4-6 oz pieces of Ahi tuna # 1 grade*

4   slices thick slab bacon

1   head of Boston Bibb lettuce

4   slices vine ripe tomatoes

4   slices of whole grain bread

1   avocado

2  Tbsp Old Bay seasoning

1  Tbsp of Sriracha (or your favorite hot sauce)

2  Tbsp mayonnaise

1  Tbsp olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste


Season tuna with salt, pepper and Old Bay seasoning. Cook bacon in sauté pan for 4 minutes each side.  Wash and dry lettuce then slice tomatoes and avocado. Take bacon out of the pan and place on a paper towel lined plate to remove excess grease. Clean pan and place back on the stove on a medium high heat.  Heat olive oil in pan and sear seasoned Ahi tuna for 2 minutes per side. Toast your bread, mix the mayonnaise and Sriracha together and spread over toasted bread. Build your sandwiches starting with the tuna, then add the bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado. The BLT was not invented, it simply evolved over the years through different eras and cultural influences to become what it is now; a simple and satisfying staple of American cuisine. Celebrate National BLT Month by evolving the BLT even further. Experiment with different spreads, toppings and protein add-ons like tuna, salmon or steak tips! After all, everybody knows that everything is better with bacon…
